Bathing in a bathtub after a tiring day at work is not just a great way to clean yourself but also relaxes you completely. However, your bath may not end up being that relaxing after all if you do not have the right bathtub. It is not simply settling on the proper color to match your bathroom color theme or picking a matching style, but several other choices have to be made before you can ensure that the bathtub is right for you. To help you in choosing the right bathtub, we have listed down the following criteria that need to be thought over when looking at various bathtubs to buy.
1) Functionality: Before going from store to store looking at different tubs, make sure you know what all you need the bathtub for, besides regular bathing of course. Different bathtubs have different features and functions, so make sure you will use all the features of a particular tub. For example, whirlpool tubs can tempt anyone as they look so comfortable and fascinating and you may end up buying one simply due to the novelty of the jets. However, will you really be using those jets? Can you justify the increased electricity expense and extra water wastage? If not, stay away from the whirlpool tub and buy one that has features which are more in keeping with your needs.
2) Size of the tub: A properly sized bathtub is an absolute must. You neither want your tub to be so small that you do not fit in it, nor do you want it to be so big that there is unnecessary usage of water. While considering the size of the bathtub, you also need to decide whether you want a one person tub or one which can fit two people. If you like to get cozy with your partner, then you may want to indulge and get yourself a two person tub. However, if your bath time is a time when you like to read or be thoughtful, you should go in for a one person bath tub.
3) Aesthetic appeal: While functionality of a bathtub is very important, its looks matter a lot too. If your bathtub matches in style and color with the other fixtures in the bathroom and fits in with your bathroom theme, your entire bath area will become that much more appealing. Thus, do try to find a matching color and style of bathtub. Your choices in colors are cream, white, pink, blue, black, brown, green, maroon, etc.
4) Bathtub material: It is important to look at the construction materials of bathtubs, as their strength, durability, and ease of maintenance depends on that. According to their materials, tubs are classified as Acrylic tubs, Porcelain tubs, Cast iron tubs, Fiberglass, Marble, and Wood. While a fiberglass tub can be very cost effective, it may not be as durable as porcelain or an acrylic tub. A cast iron tub can last you for years but is quite expensive. Marble and Wooden tubs can look very attractive but are very high maintenance and will not last you for very long. Thus, your choice of tub material will depend on your budget, your frequency of use, ease of maintenance of the tub, and its durability.
5) Regular tubs or therapeutic: A bathtub is not just used for bathing but can also have immense therapeutic value. By filling a tub with hot water and soaking your entire body in it, you can lower high blood pressure, relieve stress, and get rid of muscular aches and pains. However, you need to ensure that your entire body is immersed in the tub and not just a portion of it. To do that, it is necessary to buy a soaking bathtub instead of a standard one as they are much deeper. Thus, depending on whether or not you want your tub to be therapeutic, you need to decide between a standard bathtub and a soaking one.
6) Special Needs: Bathtubs have traditionally not been very user friendly if you are old or handicapped. Getting in and out of bathtubs can be dangerous for people with such special needs, and there is also a danger of slipping and hurting yourself. However, with ADA compliant bathtubs, you need not worry about all this anymore. ADA tubs are manufactured such that entry and exit is extremely easy and they also offer protection from slip and fall accidents due to the presence of grab bars and grab rails. Thus, if you or any family members have special requirements, do consider buying an ADA tub.
In addition to all the above, your budget is also a factor while buying a bathtub. One thing that you must do before making your final selection is to actually lie down in the bathtubs that you have short listed. This way, you can be sure that it is the right size and also gives the maximum comfort, while having adequate support for your neck, back, and head.
Hopefully, this guide will help you to choose a bathtub that is right for you and your family.
