Whether you're 18 or 80, acne has probably caused more problems for your skin than any other factor. Most people feel powerless to stop acne and for some it will devastate self-esteem by making them feel unattractive. Whether you're dealing with a fresh outbreak, or living with the deep scarring from a decade of problems, there's a whole arsenal of weaponry now available to everyone.
Skin cleansing products for acne currently available over-the-counter from the chemist are unlikely to help eradicate acne. Some of the products containing salicylic acid or glycolic acids or benzoyl peroxide will have a good effect but the side effects of these, notably skin drying can be offputting.
Freedomhealth offers services to stop acne in its tracks and also has treatments to repair all the damage too.
Top of the list is acne treatment using the Nlite laser. Dr Tony Chu, Consultant Dermatologist at the Hammersmith Hospital has studied the treatment and has suggested it represents the most important breakthrough in acne treatment in over 20 years. 'The rapidity of the response contrasts with that to conventional treatments such as oral antibiotics, which often need administration for six to eight weeks before benefits are seen,' said Dr Chu.
Dr Chu went on to say “Our results suggest this treatment could be developed as a therapeutic approach that would allow simultaneous treatment of active acne and associated scarring.”
Dr David Fenton, consultant dermatologist at St Thomas' Hospital in London, said the study was 'exciting news'.

'Acne can cause extreme anxiety and misery. It drives some sufferers to consider killing themselves,' he added.
The Nlite acne laser treatment involves passing a laser wand across the acne troubled areas. This results in disruption to the acne bacteria themselves and also induces a long lasting immune effect which acts to combat acne in the long term. It does produce striking effects with very little in the way of side effects. Treatments are usually set at monthly intervals and with approximately 3-4 treatments required as a minimum. Follow up treatments at yearly intervals or so can be extremely beneficial, maintaining the spot free interval.
Microdermabrasion is an excellent adjunctive exfoliant treatment. The skin is bombarded with specially treated ultra-fine particles. This blasts off the top layers of dead skin leaving healthy new skin underneath. The process also causes healthy new skin growth. The skin is then much easier to cleanse and anti-bacterial/antioxidant products will penetrate more deeply, keeping it healthy and preventing acne from starting. Your skin will feel younger, look great and feel fantastic.

Similar to microdermabrasion, skin peels are used to remove aged, damaged skin and encourage skin renewal. Instead of blasting the skin, chemicals are applied to remove the dead skin layers, exposing new skin, reducing scarring and hyperpigmentation (blotchiness). There are several strengths of peel available depending upon the extent of acne damage and acne scarring that needs correcting. This process can be used in conjunction with microdermabrasion and can also be done in your lunchtime with little or no 'downtime'.
Dermal fillers can help with long-term deep scarring caused by acne and other chronic conditions. Freedomhealth has various products that are injected into the skin raising the surface level to match the surrounding skin, thereby removing any indentation.
For chronic acne and very difficult acne antibiotics can be prescribed to reduce the bacterial infection that is at the root of the acne. Should the problem persist, we can also run tests to identify the bacteria causing the condition. Whilst these treatments may need to continue for months or even years, they are generally very effective. Don't worry if the different chemical names and products are confusing, our consultations will assess your skin type and problems and make recommendations where appropriate.
