For many of us travel insurance is simply seen as one of several extras that the travel agent tries to persuade us to include in our holiday package to assist in boosting his profits and make our holiday even more expensive than it has to be. Nonetheless, there are three excellent reasons for not leaving home without your international travel medical insurance policy tucked safely into your suitcase.

First, travel insurance will protect you against losing all of your financial investment in your holiday if an emergency arises and you are forced to cancel your holiday. This is especially true if you are booking your holiday well in advance as you cannot know what might happen in the weeks or months leading up to your departure. This said, by their very nature emergencies tend to appear at any time and without notice and so this is one form of protection that really should not be set against any timeframe.

It is natural to believe that nothing is ever going to happen to us but a vacation can frequently involve a considerable up-front payment and the loss of this money may well mean that you cannot re-arrange your holiday at a later date.

Second, travel insurance allows you to meet the cost of medical treatment both while you are in transit and at your destination and, if you have a significant illness or accident, will pay for you to return home if necessary.

Medical care may well be very good at your destination and it may even be a lot cheaper than it is back at home. Nonetheless, a few days in hospital may still lead to a very large bill that will eat deeply into your spending money. You could also find that medical treatment at your destination leaves a lot to be desired and you might well have to cut your trip short and head back home for the treatment you need.

Third, travel insurance will protect the value of your possessions both while you are traveling and abroad so that you will be compensated in the event of loss.

If you are a regular traveler then you will probably have suffered the loss of your luggage at some stage and will know only too well just how annoying and costly it can be. I will never forget stopping for a bite to eat on my way to the airport at the end of one particular holiday and very carefully securing my suitcase in the trunk of my hire car. When I got back to the car roughly half an hour later I found that somebody had picked the passenger door lock and folded the back seat down to gain acces to the boot and make off with my suitcase.

I will also not soon forget sitting at a traffic light one hot and sunny day when a motorcycle drew up alongside the car and a young man reached through the open passenger side window to snatch my mother's handbag which was lying by her feet on the floor.

Traveling abroad can be expensive at the best of times but heading off without adequate insurance cover can lead to bills that you simply do not have the money to pay. So, if you are planning a trip do not forget to add international travel medical insurance to your vacation list.
