Scales are used in a wide variety of different industries, and for a myriad of different applications depending on the needs of that industry. When it comes to weight measurement, there are a number of different types of scales, each delivering different characteristics, different load capacities, and different sizes and styles as needed. Scales are available in bench models, pocket models, jewelry models, industrial models, laboratory models, and models intended for medical research. Scales for medical research are designed to be extremely precise and accurate, and also capable of offering greater durability in comparison to many other models.

Scales used for medical research purposes can be found in a variety of different sizes and styles, and this will depend on what their intended use is. The type of objects or components being measured will play a role in which type of scale is ideal for weighing them. When precise and accurate weight results are needed, high quality, high accuracy scales are required. Digital scales provide more accurate results and are often designed with portability in mind, at least as far as counter top and bench models are concerned. Some scales for medical research have customizable platforms or containers for weighing, meaning that the right container or platform can be chosen depending on the size of the components having to be weighed.

In medical research, bench scales are often used for the purpose of pill counting. For example, bench scales can be used to count pills out when the weight of a single pill is known. The scale may automatically determine the weight of a single pill by prompting the scale operator to place a known sample of pills on the scale platform. Scales in the medical research industry can be used to weigh components as small as fractions of a gram in weight, or as heavy as several hundred pounds depending on the necessary application. In an industry where only small measurements need to be taken, portable pocket scales are often chosen because they weigh only up to 500 grams. But if wheelchair bound patients must be weighed, then a suitable wheelchair scale, with a large capacity, must be utilized.

When only small objects are being weighed, choosing a scale with a small maximum capacity, such as 500 gram pocket scales, is going to deliver more precise results than if a larger capacity scale were being used. In the medical research industry, it is common for a number of different types of scales to be used depending on what has to be measured.

In laboratory applications and when it comes to scales for medical research, one of the primary considerations is durability, because durability leads to long term precision and accuracy. In the medical industry, producing completely accurate results is of vital importance. When weighing very fine quantities of chemicals or drugs, precision in accuracy is vital to make sure that the right results are achieved. High quality, high durability scales are capable of providing this level of accuracy because they can withstand greater use without losing their calibration in the process.

A wide range of different scales are used when it comes to the medical research industry, but the same thing is true for each one of them: They offer durability and accuracy when it is most demanded and when achieving precise results on a consistent basis is imperative.
