Unconventional methods for recovery of lost data can often provide you with some measurable avenues and at times the only option to get what you want. The emails that are permanently deleted aren’t actually completely deleted when these have left the Deleted Items folder. Therefore, whenever an email gets deleted from the PST file, it simply gets replaced by the other.
Here the trick is to get back that one message that has been removed or deleted. There are numerous recovery examiners who deliberately corrupt the PST and then recover it, thereby retrieving all the contents including the ones which were permanently deleted from the PST file. You can do this yourself too, but make sure you create a backup first. As the method given below involves corrupting the Outlook’s PST file, we strongly suggest you to create a backup before attempting the process. After creating a backup, follow these steps:
1.In order to corrupt the PST file, open it with the hex editor of your choice. (If you don’t have one, download one from internet, as these can be easily downloaded)
2.Delete positions 7 through 13 with the spacebar. Because you are using hexadecimal numbering, this actually clears 13 characters in the following positions:
00007
00008
00009
0000a
0000b
0000c
0000d
0000e
0000f
00010
00011
00012
00013
While you clear a position with the spacebar, the editor will always display the code “20”
3. After clearing these positions in the file, save it. Your PST can be corrupt.
4.Run the Outlook Repair Tool (Inbox Repair Tool), Scanpst.exe to recover the file. On Win2K and WinNT systems, the executable is located at C:Program FilesCommon FilesSystemMapi1033NT. In Office 2000 CD-ROM you will find the executable at Drive:PfilesCommonSystemMapi1033NT. In WinXP, the file is located at C:Program FilesCommon FilesSystemMapi1033.
5.After creating a backup, the Inbox Repair Tool repairs the damage and recreates the PST. Now open the new PST in Outlook. The Deleted Items folder will be containing all removed messages, everything that you deleted will be restored.
Although this technique falls against the norms of usual productive measures available for Outlook repair, but it may be the best available option for retrieving specific messages that have been permanently deleted from Outlook. This is quite a simple method to perform and you don’t have worry at all for recovering your important data. However, in case your PST file gets highly corrupt or damaged, you can always switch to Outlook repair tool which are specially devised to repair PST files and fetch vital data from corrupt or damaged PST file. So when, the next time you want to recover important information from a message that has been deleted permanently, you can consider this as an option for getting the data back.
